Marcus Thames has been on fire for the New York Yankees.

MLB Power Rankings: September 2

The New York Yankees have continued to fight after being behind the Rays for the last two weeks and have finally prevailed to grab hold of the number one spot in the majors again.

Eric Young Jr. is getting plenty of PT for the Colorado Rockies.

Dear RotoRob: What Should I Change?

If he is I’d make the switch with Capps as it appears that Uehara has the inside track in Baltimore and I think the situation in Minnesota has the potential to be a closer-by-committee scenario. I like your team and its potential to be successful. Let’s hope your guys heed the call and produce at the level they’re capable of and you’ll be in good shape.

Brian Fuentes has been acquired by the Minnesota Twins.

Podcast: Making our Pitch

A quick review of the closer situation around the big leagues finds us with even more change this week. Is this revolving door syndrome something that we should address when it comes to our draft strategy next spring?

Fernando Rodney is the new closer of the Los Angeles Angels.

The Wire Troll: Trolling for Saves

It’s time to briefly discuss a little year-end Fantasy strategy. For those Fantasy owners playing in leagues with an inning cap for pitching, it’s important to remember that stat service providers do in fact allow you to exceed that maximum. On the day your team exceeds the maximum, all stats accrued on that day will count. If you have points to gain on that last weekend in both wins and strikeouts, loading up on your starting pitching can be a difference maker. It can be a long winter when you come up one win or a handful of strikeouts short of a league title.

Jonny Venters has been extremely sharp for the Atlanta Braves.

MLB Power Rankings: August 26

The Tampa Bay Rays are still atop the standings, but who knows for how long. The season-long battle between division the Rays and division rival New York seems like it will continue until October.

Jeremy Hellickson has been sent down to work on being a reliever for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Dear RotoRob: Who Should I Dump?

Latos is enjoying an incredible year and, yes, in all probability his IP will be monitored. That being said, he is an integral part of the Padre rotation and he will be starting down the stretch as San Diego moves towards clinching the NL West. My guess is you’ll see him going no deeper than 90 pitches per start, but based on his recent performances that should still give him plenty of win opportunities.

Bud Norris has been looking strong for the Houston Astros.

The Wire Troll: This Bud’s For You

Norris has four wins in his past six starts — an amazing feat for a Houston starter — and has gone at least six innings in each of those starts. Don’t expect a repeat of that 14-strikeout performance against the Pirates any time soon, but Norris has turned into a viable option in all formats. Those playing in H2H formats should seriously consider him as an option as a two-start pitcher this coming week.

Kerry Wood has pitched well for the New York Yankees.

MLB Power Rankings: August 19

The Rays have finally reclaimed the top spot from the Yankees for the first time since the week of June 14. New York had held the top spot for two solid months until splitting series with the Royals, Rangers, and Red Sox. With the Rays winning their fifth straight on Wednesday, a run which includes a sweep of the Texas Rangers, they have proved they deserve to be the top dog.

Mike Moustakas is tearing up Triple-A in the Kansas City Royals system.

Podcast: State of the Game

We got things rolling with a lengthy discussion on the state of Fantasy baseball and some of the potential changes we could see moving forward. Are holds a viable category in our game and is OBP a viable alternative to the traditional BA?

Jeremy Guthrie has been on a roll for the Baltimore Orioles.

The Wire Troll: Pie in the Sky

It’s hard to believe that Pie is only 25. We’ve been following his unlimited potential tag since he enjoyed that 2006 breakout campaign at Triple-A Iowa at the age of 21. Over the past ten games, Pie has hit .300 with two homers, six RBI and one theft, making him an intriguing option over the balance of 2010. Potential five-category players should always be near the top of your shopping list.F

The San Diego Padres added Miguel Tejada for the stretch run.

MLB Power Rankings: August 12

After a couple week’s absence of the Power Rankings we’re back, and the most surprising team is the Toronto Blue Jays with 59 wins, enough to be a contender in other divisions, but in baseball’s best division, the Jays sit 10 games back in the AL East, trailing the Yankees, Rays, and Red Sox. Another surprise is that the race for the NL Central between the Cardinals and the Reds is still so close. I expected the Cardinals to take a bigger lead after the All-Star break, but it seems as if the Reds deserve more credit than they were given as they are showing no signs of packing it in.

Vicente Padilla is performing well lately for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Dear RotoRob: Swapping Starters

This is an interesting question and an interesting format, Daniel. I think that to help resolve your conundrum, a closer look at the numbers is in order. Let’s take a quick scan at the stats since the All- Star break.

Thomas Diamond had an excellent debut for the Chicago Cubs.

The Wire Troll: Diamond in the Rough

It’s yet another tough injury for the BoSox in a season that’s become a series of health woes for them. Without further ado, let’s give this week’s waiver wire picks a look-see.

Josh Tomlin is looking sharp for the Cleveland Indians.

Is Josh Tomlin for Real?

The Cleveland Indians continue to hold their own lately, and have suddenly pulled into fourth place in the AL Central, just 6.5 games behind the reeling Tigers. Okay, so they put themselves in too big a hole in the first half for this season to matter, but third place in the Central doesn’t seem so outlandish now, and that’s something to be excited about if you’re unfortunate enough to be a fan of the Tribe.

Michael Olt is having a strong pro debut in the Texas Rangers system.

Fantasy Notes: The Long-awaited Return of Chris Young

With four months of the schedule complete, Mo has not been scored on in half of those months, and he was barely touched in a third. At the age of 40, Rivera is not showing any cracks in his game and part of the reason for that is because the Yankees are being smart about his workload. He’s on pace to appear in just 61 games which would be his lowest since 2002, when he missed a good chunk of the season with injuries. Not only are opponents batting a mere .141 against him (his lowest BAA ever), but the dude is on track for the lowest WHIP and ERA of his absolutely brilliant career – a career that just seems to be getting better by the season. I think we’re all just running out of superlatives on this one…
